Summer on a Budget

by | Jul 17, 2021 | Tips & Tricks

Now that more activities and businesses are opening with less restrictions, you may feel the urge to get out and just DO STUFF… either on your own, with friends, or family. While it’s recommended that you check in with each business or attraction prior to going to make yourself aware of any public health and safety protocols in place, here are some fun, budget-friendly activities to do in Ontario:

Staying close to home in Niagara

Living here in Niagara, we’re blessed with so many things to see and do, many of which are free or budget-friendly. Maybe there’s something you haven’t seen in awhile, or never explored.

  1. Avoid some of the busier tourist attractions near the falls by exploring the beauty and wonder of the whirlpools at Niagara Glen (Free)
  2. Take in the beauty of the Niagara Parks Botanical Garden (Free)
  3. Bicycle, walk, rollerblade or just head for a drive and a picnic along the Niagara River Parkway (Free)
  4. Check out Niagara Falls’ newest attraction, as the Canadian Niagara Power Station opens for self and guided tours July 30th. (Paid)
  5. Check out and support local and one of the many Farmer’s Markets, including the Ridgeway Farmers Market, Grimsby Market, Welland Farmer’s Market and Pelham Farmer’s Market (Free admission)
  6. Rent a canoe, kayak or pedal boat and explore Welland via the water (Rental fees apply)
  7. Pick a variety of seasonal fruit at Cherry Avenue Farms in Vineland (Purchase your basket of fruit)
  8. Enjoy Port Dalhousie and Lake Ontario, and check out the Lakeside Park Carousel — still only 5 cents a ride!
  9. Head over to Happy Rolph’s Animal Farm with the kids (Free)
  10. Explore the escarpment and more in Grimsby at Beamer’s Conservation Area (Free)
  11. BONUS for the hikers — why not take a Bruce Trail challenge and discover the Niagara leg of this iconic trail, or join the Niagara Bruce Trail Club to participate in group hikes and more.

Daytripping around Ontario

It doesn’t have to be a weekend away. There are plenty of exciting things to explore only a short drive away. Check out some of my favourites!

  1. Visit St. Jacob’s Market and the surrounding area.
  2. Head up to Kitchener with the kids for a day of fun at Bingeman’s Water Park
  3. Float down a lazy river tubing at various locations in Ontario
  4. Get your head in the clouds with Treetop Trekking in Hamilton (Binbrook Conservation Area)
  5. Embark on a treasure hunt in a variety of communities with Geocaching (just download the app and go!
