We’ve just made it through another Valentine’s Day! This is one of those holidays that people have mixed feelings about. Is it a “Hallmark Holiday” that’s just derived to bolster certain parts of our economy as we see everything romance and dining marked up to celebrate the holiday? So many couples feel pressured to default to showing their affection for their partner through excessive spending. Can you relate?
Whether it’s Valentine’s Day, birthdays, or any other holidays speckled throughout the year, how do you celebrate?
Do you go big, spend big, and blow it out or stay small and watch your pennies? Do you focus on those more traditional holidays on the calendar, or the personal wins like a promotion, accomplishment, or goal reached?
With so much economic uncertainty, more and more people are falling into the camp of overspending to celebrate, or not celebrating at all because they feel they “can’t afford it.”
It doesn’t have to be one way or the other!
Here are my top 3 (with a bonus) cost-effective ways that can inspire you to still celebrate, to the point that you’re financially comfortable to do so.
Make it Personal
Celebrating, whether it’s the biggest of traditional holidays or the tiniest of wins, should be personal. Making it meaningful can be cost-effective and have a greater impact. This can be anything from making a favourite dish for dinner or going for a hike to a favourite spot. They don’t lie when they say it’s the thought that counts.
Get Creative
Tap into your imagination and make amazing things happen. Now, it doesn’t need to be something handmade, but instead of doing the “usual” thing to celebrate, try something new. Maybe a new restaurant or get in the kitchen and test a new recipe together. Have the whole family get involved and make it fun!
Quality over Quantity
Maybe you’ve worked hard to achieve something, or you’re just needing to reconnect as a couple or family? Make the celebrations about quality time and connectedness. Why go to a movie or show when you can have a games night at home?
Support Local for a fuller experience
Whatever your jam when it comes to celebrating, look to those locally owned and operated businesses first. They’ll likely provide you a fantastic experience, unique gift, or you can find something more meaningful than a big box store. Last time I checked Walmart didn’t sell handmade pottery, custom doormats, or locally-made foods.
With Family Day up next, think outside the box and make it a meaningful experience for you and your whole family.
